Installation:
- Installed to clean disk on an alternate machine. Used the entire hard disk, no sub-partitions.
- Chose the minimum offered security options, called "Ask Me Later" in the dialog box.
Issues:
- Built-In Ethernet device not starting, Code 10 error.
- Uninstalled the device from the Device Manager, and rebooted. No effect.
- Uninstalled the device from the Device Manager, and re-scanned for new hardware. No effect.
- Downloaded the driver for the device to a floppy disk on another machine, and replaced the driver. No effect.
- Unable to remove the optical drive.
- Attempted to stop the device using the "Safely Remove Hardware" control. Control stated that the device could not be removed because it was in use. There was no disk in the drive, and no program writing to disk that I could tell.
- Attempted to stop the device again, while the drive was open. Same error.
- Shut the machine down and swapped from CD drive to Floppy drive. The machine recognized the floppy drive as new hardware on startup.
- Hard Disk Failure: At this point, the hard disk slipped a bearing and began emitting horrible grinding/clicking noises. I decided to abandon testing until the hard drive could be replaced.
At this point, the faulty drive has been replaced, and I am in Install #4, Codename: Driven. More on that, later.
