Cleaning the Microwave

Sammich and v.2.0 are out food shopping. I decided to bless the kitchen while they were out. You see I don't clean the house I bless the house, and me and Sammich and v.2.0.

There are very few geeks out there who do not have a microwave. Microwaves tend to get pretty gross if you don't bless them on a regular basis. Stuff spills, stains spread, a terrain may form in the microwave from neglect.

Here's a concept that may blow your geek mind. If you clean your microwave regulary before it starts to look like the recent photos of Titan it will be easier to clean and keep clean.

I think Stongbad's head just asplood.

Here's how I clean our microwave. Oh, right how I bless our microwave. I fill a microwavable mug about half full of white vinegaer. You can buy vineger at the grocery store. Vineger is vineger go for the cheapest kind you can find. I place the vinegered mug in the microwave and heat it for two minutes. Microwaves vary you might need more or less time. You don't want the vineger to boil but you do want some nice vineger steam to build up in the microwave.

Ding! The microwave is done. Let it stand for a few monments then open the door. Take care removing the hot vineger filled mug. Set the mug aside on a heat resistant surface.

Next take a moist paper towel or soft, clean, moist rag to the inside of the microwave. The vineger steam helps loosen up the caked on gunk. Be sure to remove the glass tray for seperate cleaning if your microwave has a tray. Get in all the corners and don't forget the celing of the microwave.

If your microwave is super dirty you may need to repeat the vingeger heating and wiping several times.

The key is to get it clean then keep it clean with routine upkeep. Think of it as a sort of data backup. You need to do it regulary for it to be effective.

But what to do with the super heated vineger. As all true geeks know from their childhood of making volcanoes you can mix baking soda with vineger to create super fizzy, foaming action. This fizz is a great way to freshen your kitchen sink drain/disposal. Pour a bit of baking soda into the drain and follow it with the hot vineger. Stand back and listen to the hot baking soda vineger action freshen your drain.

Cool. If I had known you were going to do that, I probably wouldn't have been as meticulous as I was cleaning it out from the 'oatmeal boil-over' it suffered just an hour or so earlier...
