No network for you!

Still here, and still working on things. Ran into an interesting issue yesterday between Veritas BackupExec and some Windows 2000 silliness, somehow triggered by moving the server to a different subnet.

The idea was that the backups of the main servers were taking too long since the backup box had to cross the firewall to do it.  There are fewer, and smaller servers on the inside of the firewall than in the DMZ, so the obvious solution was to put the backup box in the DMZ.  I ran a cable, downed the server, popped the new connection in, and brought it up... PAINFULLY slowly.  When I finally got to the part where I was going to change the IP address, the "Network Connections" folder was empty.  After spending a few minutes troubleshooting hardware, moving the box back to the old network, and perusing the event log, I found this article on Veritas' site.  Basically stating that the Removable Storage Manager was to blame, and I had to disable that, and update the tape drivers.  OK.

Well, I got rid of the RSM and RasMan errors that way, but I still couldn't get anything in the Network Connections folder.  Expert's Exchange had a few clues, and I ended up disabling, rebooting, and re-enabling the NetMan service.  Finally, things came up and I was able to make the IP switch.  Backups are running very smoothly now, and much faster than they were before.  Serves me right for thinking this would be simple, eh?
